Nan Tien Cultural Festival – A Great Place to Celebrate the New Year

Abbess Yi Lai & Fo Guang Shan Nan Tien Temple would like to invite you to help us celebrate our Cultural Festival.

This year the annual event will run from the 25th - 28th of December and 1st3rd January.  This festival is a celebration of our multicultural community and includes a variety of activities, performances, arts and crafts,  including Lion Dance and vegetarian cuisine from various cultures.  This celebration attracts thousands of visitors each year and proves to be a fun and colourful event for young and old.

In Eastern culture various lanterns are hung, to celebrate the coming of New Year and during the festival Chinese Lanterns will decorate the Temple.  There will be something to surprise and interest you at every corner of the temple.

Our vegetarian food fair in the court yard and dining hall is always a favourite, with snacks & meals from China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Hungary and Turkey.

The court yard will also be alive with multicultural performances twice a day.  The Lion dance one of China’s most distinctive cultural arts, will also be performed on New Years day, bringing with it good fortune, prosperity, and longevity.

Our corridor, referred to as “Cultural Corridor” during the festival, will be adorned with hand crafts such as: windmill making, lantern painting and origami.  These are a favourite with many children but also enjoyed by many adults.

Early morning New Years Day, there will be chanting and the traditional pilgrimage lead by the Reverends of Nan Tien Temple.  This involves reciting the Buddha’s name whilst walking and prostrating from the gate to the Main Shrine.  The purpose of this is to get rid of bad Karma and show filial piety as well as developing a pure compassionate nature.

‘Harmony Day’ also on 1st January will be the highlight of our Cultural Festival, during which we will be holding our Multi Faith Prayer for World Peace at 2pm.  The prayer has been a New Year tradition at the Temple since 2007.  The purpose is to unite the community, regardless of cultural background or religious faith, in the common goal of creating awareness and promoting world peace.  Representatives from various Church groups and other dignitaries will offer prayer and goodwill and once again you are most welcome to attend.

Our Festival is made possible due to the hard work of our dedicated staff, BLIA & BLIA YAD members who give up there time to serve the community, offering other joy, convenience & hope.

We hope to see you at our festival and wish you a harmonious New Year OMITOFO
