Nan Tien Buddhist Temple Parramatta

FSG Nan Tien Buddhist Temple Parramatta is the first Fo Guang Shan temple in Australia, inaugurated on April 8, 1991. Located in Parramatta, in the western suburbs of Sydney, it is approximately a 40-minute drive from the city centre. Serving as the "spiritual home" for local devotees, it is not only a center of faith but also an important hub for cultural and community activities. On November 18, 2000, the temple held its reconstruction completion ceremony, with Venerable Master Hsing Yun presiding over the event. Australian Federal Minister for Immigration Philip Ruddock, MP Ross Cameron, Councillor David Bonger, and 1,600 guests, including representatives from Fo Guang Shan and the Sydney Chinese Cultural Centre, attended the ceremony. Minister Ruddock remarked, "The contributions of Fo Guang Shan to Sydney are widely recognized."
The temple covers approximately 1,090 square meters of land, with a building area of approximately 2,570 square meters. It includes and an underground car park.
• Ground floor: Reception, meeting rooms, classrooms, Five Contemplations Dining Hall, BLIA Sydney and Chinese School offices.
• Second floor: Main shrine (Tathāgata Hall), Sutra transcription room, library, and additional classrooms.

Dharma Propagation Activities

1)    Study Groups
  o    Humanistic Buddhism Study Groups conducted in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.
  o    Humanistic Buddhism Propagation Training Courses for Lay Speakers.

2)    Community Education & Arts Courses
  o    Tea Meditation, Choir, Ceramic Art, Chinese Painting, Pastel Nagomi Art Workshop, Meditation & Tea, Yoga & Art Therapy, and more.
  o    In support of lifelong learning, Nan Tien Buddhist Temple Parramatta also collaborates with BLIA Sydney Western Suburbs Loving Care Team
        t0 run the “Evergreen Vitality Hub.”

3)    Nan Tien Chinese School of Sydney
  o    Offers Children's Mandarin Classes, Aesthetic Arts Classes, and “Three Acts of Goodness” Buddhist Education for Kids.
  o    Offers Chinese Ink Painting for Adults4)    Lectures
  o    Hosts Buddhist lectures by monastics, BLIA Dharma lecturers, and health professionals.
  o    Humanistic Buddhism speakers also participate in environmental and mental wellness forums.

5)    Workshops and Seminars
  o    Training seminars for BLIA members and volunteers.
  o    Supports the BLIA International Buddhist Examination to enhance the faith and knowledge of Fo Guang members.

6)    Community Gatherings
  o    Organizes various festive and community-building events such as Lunar New Year Eve gatherings, Mother’s Day gratitude ceremonies,
         Buddha’s Birthday volunteer reunions, Grandparents Day outing and Intergenerational Family Fun day celebrations.

7)    Chanting Services
  o    Weekly Light Offering Dharma Services (Sundays)
  o    Monthly Great Compassion Repentance Service
  o    Annual ceremonies include:
       • Thousand Buddhas Dharma Service (Lunar New Year)
       • Qingming Memorial Service
       • Taking Refuge in Triple Gem Ceremony
       • Fo Guang Baby Blessing Ceremony
       • Ullambana Festival Dharma Service

8)    Buddhist Family Visit 
        Outreach visits to households to cultivate correct understanding and faith in Buddhism at the family level.

Community Engagement
1)    Active Community Involvement 
       Engages in local events and maintains close relationships with government and community organizations.  For example, Nan Tien Temple and
       BLIA Sydney participated in the joint celebration of Buddha’s Birthday organized by the NSW Government and the Buddhist Council of NSW.
2)    Facilitating Religious Dialogue and Interaction 
        Warmly hosting visiting groups to promote religious dialogue and interaction.
3)    Charity & Sustainability
        Actively supports environmental sustainability through initiatives such as:
  o    Tree planting
  o    Clean-Up Australia Day
  o    VegRun
  o    Promotion of Veg Plan A
  o    Charity Garage sales (3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle)
  o    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):  Actively promotes awareness of the SDGs in the community, and educates children
        to care about the Earth and humanity through cultural and educational activities such as: SDG Young Artist Award & SDG Creative Nature Art
        Project.
