About HSYO

Fo Guang Shan Nan Tien Temple Harmony Symphony Youth Orchestra (The HSYO) is the first youth symphony chamber orchestra established by a Buddhist Organization in the southern hemisphere. Initiated co-founded by Fo Guang Shan North Sydney Fo Guang Yuan and internationally recognized professional music artist violinist and pianist Dr. Sherry Hsiao. We are pleased to appoint Sherry serves as the artistic director of the Harmony Symphony Youth Orchestra. Sherry has received her Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts research, and music teaching qualifications in Taiwan, the United States, Italy, and Australia on four different continents. Sherry has more than 20 years of extensive professional Philharmonic Orchestra performances experiences, as well as worldwide music artist-teaching experiences in the Australian NSW government school, non-government schools, and a number range of primary, secondary, tertiary schools in the USA and Taiwan. Sherry is also the founder and Artistic Director of the Sydneysider Music Academy and lecturing Violin/ Piano / Chamber Artis program. She is a Full Member of the Music Teachers Association, NSW Australia, and conductor of the symphony orchestra of NSW primary and secondary school education networks.

The Harmony Symphony Youth Orchestra recruits young orchestral players between the ages of 9 and 35. All members must first pass a strict selection audition. Through all-around and multi-level systematic and rehearsal training every week, members learn professional ensemble music from different periods and styles, strengthening their ability to perform orchestral music, and sharing the high-quality orchestral music performance together. Under the leadership of the artistic conductor Hsiao, each semester will bring a number range of well-known classical symphony music and Buddhism music to the audience around the greater Sydney area, their wonderful performance is well received by everyone. The Harmony Symphony Youth Orchestra is an excellent youth orchestra full of enthusiasm, dynamic, and constantly striving for its excellent artistic level. The orchestra emphasizes individual musical attainments and professional performance skills, as well as discipline and team spirit. The members of the orchestra and the Parents Supporting Team also actively participate in local and multi performances, not just only expanding their horizons, playing with others, and continuing to accumulate rich performance experience. By providing a holistic and comprehensive music education of the utmost quality, HSYO Artistic Director Sherry hopes students can embark on a rewarding and fulfilling musical journey. 

Adhering to Master Hsing Yun's teaching, by purifying the spirit of the heart with sound, the Harmony Symphony Youth Orchestra will continue to bring good and beautiful symphonic music to the community and society. Let the harmonious music reverberate and illuminate every corner.

Enrolment welcome: 
1. Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Harp, 
2. Woodwinds: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Oboe, Bassoon, 
3. Brasses: Trumpet, Trombone, French horn, 
4. Percussion and Piano 
All instrumentalist with minimum 3rd Grade of AMEB / ABRSM / Trinity / Suzuki, and Sight-Read ability, between age 9 - 35.
