The Harmony Symphony Youth Orchestra (HSYO) is a unique musical group that combines the beauty of Buddhist music with classical Western music. It was formed in 2020 with the ideal of spreading the joy of the dharma sound and orchestral music, that connects the most talented young musicians with peers, learned essential life skill, formative experiences, and made lifelong friends.
The Harmony Symphony Youth Orchestra is a place to gain valuable practical skills, which transforms students into professionals. HSYO also provides an abundance of performance opportunities to students throughout the year. Apart from stage performances, students will also get the chance to participate in different community performances at shopping malls, non-profit organisations, and temples to further broaden their horizons. The Harmony Symphony Youth Orchestra aims to provide a quality platform for rising elites to learn, interact and perform.
We are pleased to appoint Sherry Hsiao as Artist Director Conductor for the Harmony Youth Symphony Orchestra. She is the Artist Director and founder of Sydneysider Music Academy and leading the violinists and pianists. She has over 25 years extensive teaching experiences wide variety of orchestra, public and private school to college and adult students. She teaches examination technique classes, and masterclass and piano ensembles to chamber orchestra. She established an international reputation for her compelling teaching performances and artistic individualism.
By providing a holistic and comprehensive music education of the utmost quality, we hope students can embark on a rewarding and fulfilling musical journey.
Members of the ensemble will gain their symphony orchestra performance skills, access professional development opportunities, and develop skills that will assist them in launching a career as a versatile artist of the 21st century

AUDITION INSTRUCTIONS FOR 2021
Your audition will last between 5-10 minutes and will consist of the following:
● Date: Sunday, 14:00 - 15:00pm (the exact date will be notified in a separate email)
● Venue: ZOOM/Google meet (link will be provided in a separate email)
● Audition Fee: $60 (BLIA member $50)
● Instrumental required: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass
● Minimum Required: AMEB 3 grade or equivalent, previous ensemble experience required, sight-reading skill.

2. ORCHESTRAL EXCERPTS
Once you submit your Audition Application form, you will be sent the Audition materials to download and practice
3. PIECE OF YOUR OWN CHOICE
Choose a 3- 5 minute passage/piece without accompaniment that you are familiar with that best displays your musicality and technical proficiency. It is strongly advised that this piece be from within an established examination syllabus such as ABRSM, AMEB, or Trinity College London.
4. SCALES AND ARPEGGIOS
Please prepare these using a tempo, bowing, and fingering which allows you to play fluently and with good intonation. If you are able to play at a faster tempo and use a different bow stroke for each scale while retaining your fluency and intonation, this will impress the audition panel.
This is an important part of your audition and an essential skill for orchestral musicians. Be sure to ask your teacher for advice and practice sight-reading. Remember to not get overwhelmed and to take time to check time signature, key signature, accidentals, tempo, dynamics and phrasing, etc.

Auditions are unaccompanied
You will receive your Orchestral Excerpts, audition date and time through separate email. HSYO Auditions for 2021 will commence in early December.

Please send your recordings to firstname.lastname@example.org including excerpts, own piece, scale, and arpeggios.
2. Own pieces song no longer than 5 minutes
(No piano accompaniment required)
3. 3 octaves scale and arpeggios ‒
G major, D major, A major, F major, Bb major, Eb major.
4. SIGHT-READING test online via ZOOM/Google Meet.
RESULTS: will be released via email.
